Re-watching him on Super League's Supermen is a sobering experience.
At first watch, alot of the things he kept repeating (let his family/team down etc) I wrote off as quite laughable, trite and insincere.
On second watch, you look a little deeper.
A troubled bloke. A bitter end.
I feel for his kids.

| I still cannot get over it.
I have to admit I was never a fan of his as a rugby player, but RL is just a game and I never knew him off the pitch. He was described as a top bloke from Barrie and Tez O'Connor yesterday and I believe that was the case.

Not sure how true that statement is. Newton strikes me as the kind of person who would have rejected or not taken up any form of help that was available.
Both Carney & McDermott said they'd tried to help him but obviously he kept his true feelings pretty close to his chest.
I don't think blaming the RFL is appropriate to be honest.
It's just such a sad thing that anyone has to resort to something like this. |
