| Smith built and picked the current team, of course the onus is on him. You wouldn't say he has no part in success and it's just the players would you? It applies in both scenarios

| In certain games TS has made critical errors that ultimately cost us a win...
But last night there wasn't anything anyone could have done. Let's not kid ourselves, that is our level and it has been so all season but for minor peaks when it didn't really matter either way to a weakened Leeds team. We are no better or poorer than that least night.
Clarkey said it on sky last month, we won't make the top 4 and it'll take 3 years to build us back up.
I hate him for saying it but cannot give him an arguement.
Does TS have 3 years of confidence from the board to turn things around? Currently he has only one year.

| Tony Smith is a good coach, as others have said he has given you more success than you have seen for a while. But it is also true that some times a change of coach is needed to reboot a clubs progression. I think it would be a mistake to read too much into your performances in the 8's. Last night your players looked like they just wanted the season to be over. Realistically all they have left to play for is pride, possible international selection and TS's job, on last nights showing that was not enough motivation for many of them. For mine much of the "blame" for last nights performance lies with the players rather than the coach.

| How about possibly an up & coming English coach ,Paul Rowley of Richard Marshall & stick Tony as Director of Rugby to preserve his sanity. Maybe his man management skills could be better used at director level.

| Quote Winslade's Offload="Winslade's Offload" Finally where were the set moves ?
Quote Winslade's Offload
TBF, we have three well-honed set moves:
1. Short pass to a forward who drives it up. This usually works out ok in our half, but is less effective 3/4 tines in a row on the opposition line.
2. Pass to Clark or Ratchford who, from a standing start, wriggle their bums provocatively and try to run between defenders. Comes off sometimes, probably quite easy to manage though.
3. 2-3 passes along the line to players standing still. This often culminates in a knock on, but every so often one of the passes goes behind everyone, meaning our men dive back quickly to try to pick it up.

A primary role of a coach is to motivate his players - the opposition was Wigan, FFS, it shouldn't be that difficult to motivate a Warrington side to play them. If he can't motivate them for that, and indeed if they can't be ar$ed to play for 'his job', as you suggest, then a shake up is needed.

If any player can't motivate himself for any game nevermind games against the likes of wigan or challenge cup semi-finals, then he needs to take a long hard look at himself and decide whether or not he is in the right place, or even the right career.

I agree that the players need to take along hard look at their season's 'work' and if they do there wouldn't be too many that can look themselves n the mirror and say that they have done themselves justice.
On the other hand who's bloody players a they and who's job is it to sort them out? You know the one's, the shirkers and hiders, the under achievers, the feckless, the witless.
The young lads that had probably a bit more game time than 'we' would have liked have done really well. Tony and Richard whoever is coaching appears to have taken the feckless thrown in the witless and quite comfortably turned out a team of s

| I really can't believe some of the stuff on this site, one average season and it's sack the coach, such a player is past his sell by date, not fit to wear the shirt etc. My Dad started taking me in the late 60's and if you lot think this team is crap you really should been here then! Just wondering who will be the scapegoat next year? with Asotasi gone, Wheeler being hounded out which poor sod will be bearing the brunt? what short memories so many have

Funnily enough my dad also started taking me to Wilderspool in the early 60's as well, and yes I have also watched some dire displays. The problem here though is the fact that Smith inherited a very good squad when he joined - I am not going to go over all the players again because they have appeared on many threads, and we know who they all are. But flash forward to this year and he has a squad with debatable signings such as England, Asotasi and Wheeler. Now, either you criticse the quality, or you say that he has assembled a good squad but is unable to motivate and build them into a team. But either way, he has failed to maintain Wire in the top 4 of SL, in fact the performance has gone steadily down hill for the past 2-3 years. Add in the comments of Micky Higham ("need to get rid of the dead wood"icon_wink.gif and those of Simms ( "clear the air meeting with the players"icon_wink.gif and it is very clear that all is not well at chez HJ.

| I don't subscribe to the ''players weren't motivated'' line.
There were plenty of times when they showed that they were up for this match.
But confidence is low, timing is off and it's not going to turn round in the next few games. The nervousness led to some really basic errors. Some of the ball retention was abysmal. It was a wet night but too little respect was given to the ball.
We lacked ideas in attack and Wigan were always on top. (Was the defensive technique was poor, or something else? I'm not sure).
We got what we deserved - and it could have been a bigger score. (I was expecting nothing less than the score they posted).
Clearly not the standards that we are used to.
Our issues stem from not planning for the departure of key players, and poor recruitment. TS must share some blame there.
A lot of the other rubbish (imo) that's talked of here is not worth responding to.
One thing is for certain - last night convinced me that Ratch is not a f/b. Gidley is.
