| I can't fault anything that any Wigan fan has contributed on this thread. Is Riley good? yes, very good- but Charnley is better imo.

| Charnley looks like he will end up in the centres for me. He reminds me of Bridge to a degree; good, close footwork, with an eye for the gap. Where he needs to up his game, massively, is defence. Not the physicality, but the reading of the opposition attacking lines. Reminiscent of Atkins in that respect.
So, in summary; this appears to be a comparison of a winger, who is more of a fullback, and a winger who's long term future is at centre.

| Think they're both nothing better than back up players ! so why isn't their a Neither if you mean first choice because neither would from my point of View get into a Wire first choice team !

| Charnley will most likely be an international player sometime in the next 12 months, and i'm afraid Riley is quite some way off that level.
Albeit, the ginger winger is a great squad player for us and never lets us down wherever he plays, but he just doesn't have the x factor that Charnley has.
Riley has a better haircut tho

Staying with the current premise that he is a winger, I can't see him displacing Briscoe or Hall in the next 12 months. Throw Ben Jones-Bishop into the equation and it muddies the water even further.

| Charnley. That was easy.
The guy couldn't read one of those books with massive print for old people (as in he can't read a game defensively) but imagine the damage he would do in the best attacking team to ever play super league!
It would be scary to watch the damage that him and bridge would do.
The bigger point is that Riley is a fullback and a great winger and is being groomed for the former (I believe) I think that the cover that Riley gives us (being top class in two positions) is invaluable. Also, if Charnley is moving to centres he really needs to work on his D. He won't have the line to help him further in and he may leave his winger with WAAAAY too much to do!

Not sure if I should comment on your point of view, but have a look at the try scoring record of both players. I'm quite happy with Chris Riley, proven try scorer and will never let you down.

| Quote 21-12="21-12"Charnley by a mile, he creates his own chances and has the ability to beat a man and make chances from nothing, look at his try in the CC quarter final against Wire. Riley is a decent finisher but has been blessed playing in the best attacking team in the league outside a quality centre.'"
I wouldn't say by mile, though you are right that Riley is helped by playing in this present Wire set-up.....Riley playing in the Wire side of 10 years ago would be about as effective as Dean Gaskell.
However, in the world of salary cap rugby, Riley is invaluable....Covers several positions and is reliable without being a superstar, which from the wage perspective means he won't ever be a huge strain on the budget.....Conversely, if Charnley turns out to be as good as Wiganers reckon he may do, he will soon be earning big money and taking up a fair portion of their cap.
