Although I started off this link by saying Woody was the best natural player I had ever seen play for Leigh, there is one obviously one other that could probably match his exploits on the rugby field - the one and only Alex Murphy. Coincidently it was against Leeds in the 70/71 season when Alex moved to standoff against the great MIck Shoebottom and scored a sensational hat trick of tries in the 1st half at Hilton Park. Does anyone else remember this match?

I do. When he went to Wire our crowds nosedived. Chairman Jack Chairman Jack is it true he wont come back oh no no and repeat.

Shortly after I was at a Leigh v Hull FC match think the attendance was 447.

I'm sure Alex will tell you himself his hero was Jim Sullivan,who taught Alex to have the speed over 20 yards to make the breaks, where John had the S

eed to score from anywhere on the pitch ,if John made a break 9 out of 10 breaks ended in tries,he could kick goals from anywhere , had speed , could do tactical kicking,had a lightening sidestep,for me he had everything , in today's Rugby Market, John Woods would be priceless , NO DOUBT.KING JOHN.

John Woods started playing for us about 1978. He was a pleasure to watch.

John Woods WAS Leigh RLFC when I was growing up. The 81/82 team of Champions was fantastic, but Woody was THE man everyone went to watch.



I consider myslelf privilaged to have seen such a great player live.

Made debut against Barrow September 1976.............. and scored!

I have never seen John Woods play but it sounds like he was a great player.
