Fox was good enough to take Northern from relegation certs to joint 2nd in comp within 2 years in the early 90s. Not bad for someone "behind the times".
He was a better coach than a lot of younger men back then. |

Doh,he wasn't behind the times then,it's when he was still trying to coach his teams the 90's style in 2,000 that he was classed as behind the times!  |

Now it's arguments 20 years old!
In fairness, the race for second was far more open then - only Wigan and Leeds fully pro and the Loiners were a joke then. Makes you misty eyed.
Wakefield made the top 8 in 1992, having recently been promoted. And with the disadvantage of being Wakefield.
The fact is, by the mid-90s then, Fox was yesterday's man. |

I seem to remember that Fox wasn't brought in as coach though. He was a higher position than that, and managing the processes rather than coaching the team.
So we may have been behind the times then but it wasn't just down to him.
Also, his tactics in the 70s and 80s were all about getting the biggest pack you could buy, a decent half back and and some backs that were not particularly great but were fast.
Seems to me like a lot of coaches still do that.

Peter was brought in as Director of Rugby - and he put money IN! 
He wanted Peter Roe as his man, as he saw him in his own style - thus setting the agenda. His manner with the players was 'treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen' but between his hey-day's of the 80's and 90's and coming to Trin, the game moved on and the players were setting their own agenda's and becoming 'stars' to some degree.
Nothing against Peter at all and total respect for his contribution to the game, but he was the wrong man at the wrong time for us. |
