| After much 'umming' and 'ahhing' the second Catalonian Championship finally got underway last Wednesday with a trial tournament in Barcelona.
There aren't as many teams competing this year, but by all accounts the standard is much higher than 2009.
The Catalan national coach, Eric Delherbe was there to select a squad to face a Rosselló XIII in Perpignan on the 27th of March.
After the game both sets of players will be guests at the Catalans vs Hull KR match.

Both Barcelona tv and COM Ràdio featured pieces on the Catalan Championship. They were aired during the sports bulletins at midday, the time when most Catalans get their news via the television or radio.

Last Saturday, 13th March, the Catalan Association of Rugby League (ACRL) signed a collaboration agreement with the Committee of Roussillon rugby XIII and the French Federation of Rugby XIII (FFR 13) in Perpignan. The agreement establishes an agreement of collaboration between the groups to help rugby league or rugby XIII grow on both sides of the Pyrenees. The ACRL will help to improve the standard of training and technique of players. The President of the ACRL, Sergio Blazquez and the Chairman of Roussillon rugby XIII, Michel Pianelli signed the deal which was also endorsed by Mr. Guy Laforgue on behalf of the FFR XIII and by the two governments involved, Saguer Josep (Catalan) and M. Louis Caseilles (Conseil Général des OP). Blazquez said this agreement was '[ia further step towards consolidation and understanding of the ACRL and the national team with other federations and states. The agreement will help promote and improve our national rugby league team.[/i' We should emphasise the international character of the agreement with the FFR13 being joined by the two governments, French and Catalan.
The Roussillon Committee, headed by its president Michel Pianelli has been one of the key players in this agreement and agreement by both parties was absolute. Once again, Catalonia and its national teams have been strengthened internationally.

| would be good if this catalonian championship in spainish catalonia could link up with some players of spainish origin in france and from a spainish national side, they have a domestic comp and with addition of a few players from the french elite sides of spainish origin they could form a reasonble national side, maybe set up a few sides in other areas of spain as well!

| That's the last thing the Catalonia RL want. The fact that the RLIF recognise Catalonia could and should be a major factor in the development of the sport here.

But surely the final aim should be to form a Spanish Championship with a Spanish national side. Linking the success of RL there to the recognition (?) of Catalonia seems to mix a political agenda of local autonomy/independance with the development of the sport. There is no doubt that the RLIF should play no role in Spanish internal affairs.

Exactly. And if we want the game to grow in Catalonia, you could do a lot worse than being supportive of Catalan nationalism.
