| Personally I've always thought its the standards of coaching in this country (at all levels) that lets us down the most, and is the area we furthest behind the Aussies.

| its been a myth for a while....its just nobody listened...
its like when aussies come over here and say " you know super league is'nt that far behind the NRL...super leagues a tough comp.."...everybody thinks they are just pulling everyones leg just cos they get paid by our clubs...
look....the standard of the NRL has dropped drastically in the past 3 or 4 years...instead of us and the kiwis joining the aussies at the top...the aussies have dropped down..they don't dominate games anymore they win them in the last 10 or 20 mins...
like it or lump it...some people just don't like hearing it!

Smith
Madge
McLennan
Brown
Potter
Millward
Morgan
Have all proved this.
Only Noble and Kear from the selection of British coaches have had any kind of decent success.

| Quote Everyone asks about the difference between Australia and England and I've got a strong view on it,The 21-year-old former Bradford forward has been a big hit in his first six months with South Sydney and believes the ease with which he has settled into Australia's National Rugby League has helped dispel a few myths about the competition.
In fact, he has no doubt that there has been much exaggeration over the standard of the NRL in comparison to Super League and argues that many more English players could slot effortlessly into the Australian game.
"Everyone asks about the difference between Australia and England and I've got a strong view on it," he said.
"England aren't behind the Australians in any way in terms of the facilities and the science behind it.
"The competition is very tough in Australia but it's very tough in England also.
"They might have a few better beaches but I don't feel we're behind as a country, just on the scoreboard in recent years.
"I'm improving but I'd also improve in England. It's hard to measure. The competition is very similar in terms of skill, speed and strength. '"
theres plenty there...you just don't want to read it!

Correct. Also the attitude some coaches have to blooding young players is another issue. Take my club Wigan for example.
Would Joel Tomkins have made the England squad had he been under Brian Noble?
Would Liam Farrell, Ben Davies, Johnny Walker and Stefan Marsh all have made their debuts under Brian Noble?
Coaching is certainly an important issue across all levels of Rugby League. I hope more coaches like Mike MaGuire and Nathan Brown come over to the UK. Ricky Stuart being the next one.

not that i like backing up noble...but did'nt gareth ellis make his debut under noble? and the likes of kirk yeaman and james roby defo did....don't imply that noble constantly went with the old guard...we are a damn sight stronger now than we where 4 or 5 years ago..

i'm sure wigan fans could help me out naming 4 kids noble did bring through....like sam tomkins & shaun ainscough to name just 2

Why do you see it as the Aussies dropping rather than competition improving?

well after reading it (again) i'm sure he says that both leagues are very tough! and indeed he wouldn't find it much tougher anyway as he is one of the world's best forwards - there's not that many of his equivalent in aus, never mind the english game.
for what its worth i think he's playing to the media a bit here, the nrl is still miles ahead of superleague in my opinion, and don't forget there's a difference between toughness and sheer quality, but i do agree with you that the gap appears to be closing

I agree with you when you say the NRL is miles ahead, but i don't agree that the gap appears to be closing.
I watch every NRL game on the tele and the quality is a lot better than ours esp in the backs.

| We seem to be producing more quality forwards, but seriously, until we find a batch of big, athletic threequarters we'll continue to get hammered by Australia when it counts. We may have found a halfback partnership that will last for years in Eastmond and Tomkins, and a decent fullback in Widdop. But we're still dreadfully far behind in choices for 2-5.
