| Quote Wirefan="Wirefan"McGuire's got his head screwed on Pemps. All those rumoured to be going are not good enough.'"
Phelps showed some promise last season but Roberts had overtaken him at fullback up until his injury.
Lima is better than Feka
Hoffman is miles better than Bailey
Finch isn't really replacing a halfback, he'll be replacing a hooker but then Tommy will make the switch to 9. Not sure if that makes us better but Riddell needs to go home so we have no choice in that. Our reserve team hookers aren't good enough for SL yet.

Quote Wirefan="jdrocket"seems like MM is patching a large hole (three high profile and high cost players instead of youth players) rather than fine tuning'"
Youth? You mean the youth who have been playing for most of this season and will continue to play next season or are you talking about some youth players that we don't know about yet?
Wigan seem to be building a squad rather than a team and with the injuries we've had this year, it's proved to be a good idea. I'll take MM's decision making over your's if you don't mind.

| Will only improve wigan as they will now have strength in depth. Players like Farrell and Tuson who are already preety good players wont be able to get into the team other than when there is alot of injuries

| Quote nathanwood7="nathanwood7"Whilst Hoffman is a good solid player it's a shame for the good young back-rowers coming through at Wigan that Wigan are strengthening in this area. With Tomkins, O'Loughlin, Farrell, Hansen, Tuson, and Mossop, not to mention all the other lads out on loan I would have thought Wigan were well covered in this area, although you can't blame Wigan for signing international class players.
Lima is a solid prop, which is something Wigan probably need and will be an improvement on Feka.
Finch will give them a decent organising 7 for the first time in a long time.'"
In fairness, Tuson and Farrell probably aren't quite ready for the week to week battering that their bodies will get off the likes of Morley, Peacock etc. Hoffman has signed a 1 year deal and I personally think that it's with our young forwards development in mind.

Obviously three under-denaible good signings.
In relation to the "squad" thing I do think you look light for cover in the key positions of half-back and hooker. Hooker in particular looks the weakest spot with your squad for next season.
Who are left as out of contract (presuming Palasena, Bailey, Ohelps and Deacon are gonners) at the end of this season?

We have a young halfback called Joe Mellor who would have perhaps been pushing for a few games this year but he broke his kneecap preseason. But the hooking position is a concern with our only cover, Leuluai, being moved there as of next season.
The contract situation is here:
10 players out of contract at the end of the year.

Fielden is expected to re-sign but on a much reduced salary. Coley apparently hasn't decided if he's staying on or retiring.

| Interesting that Hoffman has only signed a 1 year deal (albeit with an option for a 2nd). Presumably he has one eye on going hope to play 'rep footy' whilst he still can.

No. As has been confirmed on Cherry and White a number of times, players take less money to play for Wigan because of the allure of the club and the fact they're really, really famous. Contrast this with Warrington where all the players get paid £400,000 per annum, half of which is paid off shore by Simon Moran's genius accountant and secretly all hate the club.

That's a lot of players' contracts expiring at the same time. Some might even say it is poor planning and start wittering-on about signing over 30's.
I guess Carmont enforces his additional year now. Whilst Fielden's contract will be "much reduced" with him being out-of-contract you will still have to beat off competition for his signature and he won't come at a discount.
I just pray that Karl Pryce is given another year.

A lot of those players were only resigned last year with an additional 12 months. The idea of this was for Maguire to have a look at what we had and then build his own team around that in 2011 when has had a good look at the squad.
Carmont was supposedly undecided too but it's been in the local press that he wants to stay.
Fielden was 'rumoured' to be on £250K. I think we could slice somewhere in the region of £100K off that.

| Obviously all three are improvements on what they've got. Obviously Maguire will play their best players irrespective of origin or age. He has done that this year.
However, our signing from Melbourne is miles better than any of them.
